Two Days, Two Disciplines, One Empty Apartment's Transformation
Nordic minimalist design, a different emotional register on every floor, art at every turn. An empty apartment brought to life by stylist Candan became the shared stage for photography and video.
HİM Cadde Kemerburgaz is a project that envelops you in a particular stillness the moment you enter. Its Nordic-influenced design, with minimal lines that choose necessity over excess, carries a calm rarely encountered in Istanbul. When the commission came in, I asked one question: photography or video? The answer was both. And so a two-day adventure began.
Reading Nordic Minimalist Design
The trap of Nordic design photography is this: less does not look like more; it looks like less, if not read correctly. What does the camera hold onto in a spare space? Texture, light and depth. HİM Cadde had all three: the warmth of wood, the hardness of concrete and glass, daylight falling differently between floors.
Discovering that each floor had its own identity brought both surprise and burden. The surprise: every space carried its own emotional register, so a one-size approach would not work. The burden: finding that register anew on each floor, building a different visual language each time. As colour palettes, furniture choices and light temperatures shifted, so did the camera's disposition.
In minimalist spaces, an extra chair or a misplaced shadow can break the entire composition. We spent a long time simply watching each space before framing; to understand what each element meant inside the rectangle.
Candan: The Invisible Architect's Touch
The most critical link in this shoot was not in front of the camera; it was in the prepared scene in front of it. Stylist Candan joined the process a few days before shooting and transformed the empty show apartment from top to bottom.
Photographing an empty apartment is possible; but it does not stir feeling. For prospective residents to imagine themselves there, the space needs to breathe. Every object Candan placed (a coffee cup, a book left open, a textile positioned just so) communicated that the space was not only architecturally resolved but genuinely liveable.
The artworks were an inseparable part of this. Works placed throughout the project announced that HİM Cadde was offering not just a residential address but a cultural selection. In photographic framing, the challenge was to present these pieces as part of the space itself; not as decoration, but as the space itself speaking.
A great stylist knows in advance what the photographer has not yet said. Candan was precisely that.
Long Exposure with Human Silhouettes
One of the most technically distinctive choices in the HİM Cadde shoot was the inclusion of people in long-exposure frames. Stationary camera, tripod, extended shutter; a moving person does not disappear from the frame but dissolves; they become a trace, a haze, the ghost of a moment.
We used this technique here for two reasons. First: to present the space not merely as an architectural object but as a living environment in relationship with people. Second: to counter the coolness of Nordic minimalism with human warmth; not through a direct portrait, but through a trace, a hint of presence.
The result: frames that make you pause and ask whether someone is there or not. The feeling that the apartment's future owner has not yet moved in, yet the home is already alive. That ambiguity was intentional and calculated.
Photography and Video: One Stage, Two Languages
Over two days we shot both photography and video in the same space. Running these two disciplines simultaneously means carrying two different modes of thought, two different rhythms, within one team.
Photography freezes a moment. Video flows through time. At HİM Cadde we tried to manage this difference not as a tension but as a complement. The scenes chosen for photography were static, speaking through composition; for video, the same spaces were reconfigured according to where movement began and ended. Doorways, staircases, window ledges: a frame in photography, a transition point in video.
The advantage of the dual shoot was the opportunity to hold two different dialogues with the same space. The client was left with both static and moving content to tell the story of the project; two different creative outputs from a single shoot session.
Two Days, Distilled
Day one: learning the space, watching the movement of light, finding the language of each floor, photography from morning to evening. Day two: planning the video sequences, rehearsing transitions and rhythms, capturing the long-exposure figure frames, completing all the material.
HİM Cadde Kemerburgaz gave us one of this profession's most rewarding experiences: enough time to truly understand a space, enough freedom to tell its story. Without Candan's styling, these images would have been incomplete. Without the quality of the design, there would have been nothing worth telling.
The best shoots are born not where preparation meets luck; it is born where preparation meets quality material. HİM Cadde was exactly that place.
